How to Edit Lottie Animations Without After Effects

A realistic guide to the edits you can do in the browser and the edits that still belong in motion design software.

Start with the edit you actually need

After Effects is excellent for creating motion from scratch, but many Lottie requests are simpler: change a brand color, replace a screenshot, preview a file, slow a loop, or export a GIF for a channel that cannot play Lottie.

For those jobs, a focused browser editor is faster. You can work from the delivered JSON or ZIP, avoid installing software, and keep private files on your device.

Browser edits that work well

Previewing is the first step. Check that the file renders, loops, and includes its assets. Color editing works well when fills, strokes, and gradients are stored as JSON values. Image replacement works when screenshots, logos, or illustrations are packaged as Lottie image assets.

Conversion workflows also help when a Lottie needs to become a GIF, or a short video needs to become a transparent web asset. These are delivery tasks, not timeline authoring tasks.

When to go back to After Effects

Use After Effects when you need to redraw shapes, change keyframes, adjust easing curves, modify masks, rebuild compositions, or create new animation states. A browser editor should not pretend those are simple file edits.

The productive workflow is to use both categories honestly. Author and restructure motion in a motion tool. Do final color, asset, preview, and export tasks in the browser when the delivered file is already close.

Quick checklist

  • Preview the file first.
  • Use Color Swap for palette changes.
  • Use Image Replace for screenshots and logos.
  • Use Lottie to GIF for static channels.
  • Return to After Effects for timeline changes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I edit Lottie without After Effects?

Yes, for common delivery edits such as previewing, recoloring, replacing images, and exporting alternate formats.

Can I create a new animation from scratch?

No. EasyLottie is for editing and converting existing files, not full motion authoring.

Is a browser Lottie editor private?

EasyLottie processes files locally in your browser, so files are not uploaded.

What should I try first?

Open Preview, verify the file, then move to Color Swap or Image Replace depending on the change you need.
